The Breaking of Bread Worship meeting takes place each Sunday morning at 9:30AM in Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute. It is the main highlight of our life as an Assembly of believers.
What you will see at the Breaking of Bread Worship meeting might be different from other services you have been in before. The meeting is called the Breaking of Bread or the Lord’s Supper. It is a time of worship, and the climax is when each of the believers in the local fellowship eat bread and drink wine to remember the Lord Jesus’ death (sometimes called Communion). That is why the table with the loaf of bread and the cup of wine are in the central position in the room.
There is no priest, preacher, pastor or elder who is in charge of this service. Instead there is freedom for any of the brothers in the assembly (church) to request a hymn to be sung by the congregation, or to present a prayer of worship to the Lord. There is also no program, since the Holy Spirit is leading the hearts of those who worship.
At some point in the meeting, someone will be led by the Holy Spirit to give thanks for the bread, after which time the bread will be passed around for all the members of the church to take a piece. The same thing will then be done with the cup. These two symbols were given by our Lord Jesus to represent His body which was broken at the cross, and His blood which was poured out in death so that our sins could be washed away. We hold this service “in remembrance of Him” because He asked us to do this before He died (see Luke 22:14-20), and this is also what the early Christians did each Sunday (see Acts 2:42, Acts 20:7).
After the Lord’s Supper a collection is taken from the members of the church, and then there is a time of teaching. Sometimes this teaching is given as a lecture, while at other times as a discussion/conversational Bible study. After the meeting finishes we have a time of refreshments, and we look forward to meeting you personally then.
