The story is told of the diamond dealer who was leaving an exhibition. He saw a $5 bill on the ground and stopped to pick it up, putting his briefcase full of diamonds down for just a moment. But in that moment, his treasured diamonds were stolen. He gained $5, but he lost a fortune. In the end, he lost.
In the Bible (Luke 12:16-21) Jesus tells the poignant story of a man whose farm produced a large profit. The produce was so great that he had to build bigger warehouses to store everything. He said to himself, “I’ve done well! I can now relax and do as I please.”
But God said to him, “You fool, tonight I will require your soul; and then how will your treasure benefit you?” He had invested in himself, but had never been rich towards God. He had gained much, but he lost his soul.
The Bible teaches that the soul - the real person - is everyone’s most valuable possession. And Jesus says, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust spoils, and where thieves dig through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19,20). People often pursue material wealth and ignore their eternal soul’s condition. What is most important to you? Are you concerned about your soul, your eternal well-being?
Do not be distracted by the pursuit of material goods. Jesus asks, “What will it profit a person, if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36). Most people trust banks to hold their money. But even banks can sometimes be unreliable. Heaven can be compared to a bank - but it is a perfectly reliable place to store your precious soul!
Provision for your soul to go to heaven was made at Jesus’ cross, and the price He paid for your sins is satisfactory to God. Trust your soul’s safety to the Lord Jesus today, and you will be assured a place in heaven. Whatever you lose in life, you will never lose your eternal soul’s well-being. In the end, you will win!
